Jackson County Clean
Indoor Air *Campaign
-Dedicated to protecting the health of all Jackson
County Residents by eliminating involuntary exposure
to secondhand smoke.
You have the right
to breathe smoke-free air!!
1. What is secondhand smoke?
Secondhand smoke is the smoke from the lit end
of a cigarette, cigar or pipe and the smoke that
is exhaled by a smoker.
2. Why is secondhand smoke a health issue?
Secondhand smoke is a serious health issue.
It causes the same health diseases and death in
nonsmokers that smoking causes in smokers. There
are 53,000 deaths/year due to exposure to secondhand
smoke. For every 8 smokers die they take 1 nonsmoker
with them.
3. Who is most affected?
88% of all nonsmokers in the U.S. are exposed
to secondhand smoke. Every person who involuntarily
comes in contact with tobacco smoke is affected.
The most vulnerable groups are infants, children,
people with health issues, and restaurant/bar workers.
4. Where are most common places of exposure?
The most common places are our homes, cars,
restaurants, bars, and any other public place that
allows smoking indoors. People spend approximately
90% of their time indoors. When a nonsmoker enters
a smoke filled room he/she becomes a smoker.
5. How long does it take for you to be
affected?
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand
smoke. The negative effects are immediate.

County Health Department from the Ohio Department
of Health. The goals of the grant are to increase
the awareness level of all our Jackson County residents
of the serious health risks of secondhand smoke
and to promote countywide smoke-free ordinances
for clean indoor air quality in all public places.
